This portrait of the artist was taken during her performance in Kitakyushu, Japan. Kimsooja’s body follows the curvature of the rock, becoming a line that connects and divides the earth and the sky. By lying faced away on the edge of nature, she places her horizontal body against the viewers’ standing behind. Kimsooja considers her body as an axis through which movement and stillness, self and others, horizontality and verticality are measured. It is a symbolic cross, or a crossing of dualistic realities. This performance also takes place in nature in relation to her first performance, A Needle Woman (1999), presented in the Studio, where she stands still against waves of crowds in different cities.

A Study on Body is a performative experiment on the relational structure between body, tableau, and space. Produced in the early 1980s using serigraphy, it forms the
conceptual basis of many works to follow, such as Bottari, A Needle Woman, A Beggar Woman, A Homeless Woman, and Geometry of Body, all of which, in part, rest on the foundational question of horizontality and verticality of the structure of the world.
