Bottari, a bundle of fabric that exemplifies a traditional way of wrapping personal belongings for departure, is integral not only to Korean life, but across different cultures. Though Kimsooja often makes bottari out of used bedcovers of newlyweds characterized by bright colors and symbols for good wishes, here it is reimagined in black. Using a neutral-colored fabric, she focuses our attention to its formal aspect, where a flat canvas surface transforms into a sculptural object through the act of tying a single knot. The fabric’s physical structure allows for this translation from one dimension to another. Kimsooja redefines bottari from a domestic mode of transport into a ready-used, multi-dimensional object that is conceptually expansive and embraces totality.

The artist made this bottari in memory of the late Michael O. Kewenig at the time of his passing in 2017, which came at the same time as the artist’s solo show at his gallery, titled Geometry of Breath. It encloses his personal belongings, such as his clothes, shoes, and glasses inside his bedsheet. Kimsooja wraps her bottari in used bedcovers as a way of addressing the site where one is born, dreams, loves, suffers, and dies. It is a frame of life, a life painting we are born into and leave behind.
